Assessing the Negative Effects of Suburbanization: The Urban Sprawl Restrictiveness Index in Romania’s Metropolitan Areas

Urban sprawl is widely considered to be a major issue for the functioning of urban areas, threatening long-term sustainability and affecting quality living. The aim this research develop methodology assessing negative effects uncontrolled suburbanization in metropolitan areas through multicriterial approach. Based on existing body knowledge, we have defined set indicators impact suburbanization, covering themes such as land use, water, biodiversity economy or social issues. A questionnaire was applied experts field order find out final their perceived importance. product our an restrictiveness index at local level, tested five most dynamic Romania. results highlight concentration accessible from city core, where additional in-depth analyses were performed validation.
